About MAELC
The Munro Academy Early Learning Centre (MAELC) is a fully licensed Christian early learning centre serving Northside families. MAELC provides high-quality, family-centred care and early learning for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in an environment where every child is seen, valued and inspired.
Position Summary
The MAELC Director provides daily onsite leadership for a large and growing early learning centre and leads a committed team of Early Childhood Educators and support staff with compassionate professionalism, sound judgment and a clear Christian vision. Reporting to the Munro Academy Head of School, the Director is responsible for program quality, regulatory compliance, staffing and labour relations, family engagement, health and safety, and sustainable operations. The Director is supported by an Assistant Director, administrative staff and the MAELC Committee and works closely with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD), Unifor and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership, Administration and Financial Stewardship
- Provide overall leadership for the safe, high-quality and financially sustainable operation of MAELC, translating Munro Academy's mission and Board direction into effective daily practice.
- Work with the Head of School, Bookkeeper and administrative staff to develop, monitor and execute the annual Board-approved budget; oversee parent fees, payroll inputs, purchasing, grants, subsidies, donations and required financial records.
- Maintain effective relationships with EECD representatives; understand and administer evolving licensing, funding, wage and reporting requirements; and ensure timely completion of applications, reports and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate and confidential child, family, staff, attendance, incident, inventory and operational records in accordance with legislation, organizational policy and retention requirements.
- Oversee enrolment, wait-list management and admissions with the Assistant Director, seeking to make full and responsible use of licensed spaces.
- Lead MAELC leadership and staff meetings, contribute to MAELC Committee meetings, and provide clear and timely operational reports to the Head of School and Board.
- Maintain effective systems for delegation and operational continuity, including designating qualified acting leadership when required.
People Leadership and Labour Relations
- Build a caring, healthy and accountable workplace in which staff relationships reflect professionalism, respect and the Christian ethic of love.
- Plan staffing and schedules to maintain required ratios, qualifications and supervision at all times while using staffing resources responsibly; maintain an effective substitute pool and contingency plans for absences.
- Lead recruitment, selection, orientation, supervision, coaching, evaluation, attendance management, discipline and, when necessary, termination processes in collaboration with the Head of School and in accordance with law, policy and the Collective Agreement.
- Administer the Unifor-MAELC Collective Agreement consistently; maintain constructive labour-management relationships; address concerns and grievances promptly; and consult the Head of School or external advisors when appropriate.
- Ensure staff qualifications, classifications, record checks, first aid certification, orientation, professional development and other required documentation remain current.
- Establish clear expectations, provide timely feedback and support professional growth through regular communication, staff meetings, performance reviews and relevant professional learning.
- Support student placements and partnerships with ECE training institutions where these strengthen the centre and the profession.
Program Quality and Pedagogical Leadership
- Provide the pedagogical leadership needed to ensure educators use evidence-informed, developmentally appropriate early childhood practices and thoughtfully integrate a Christian worldview in age-appropriate ways.
- Ensure programming reflects Nova Scotia's Early Learning Curriculum Framework, applicable quality-improvement expectations, licensing requirements and MAELC's policies and values.
- Lead and sustain centre-wide implementation of the Pyramid Model, working with the Assistant Director, inclusion and quality-assurance personnel, educators, families and external partners to establish priorities and embed consistent, inclusive practices across programs.
- Ensure educators receive the training, coaching, resources and ongoing support needed to implement Pyramid Model practices; monitor implementation through observation, feedback, data and quality-improvement processes, and use findings to guide professional learning and program improvement.
- Coach and support educators in observation, documentation, inclusive practice and effective classroom environments.
- Ensure required programming documentation and child progress information are completed accurately and communicated appropriately with families.
- Promote inclusion and coordinate with families, specialists and community services to support children with diverse strengths and additional needs.
- Remain current with developments in early learning, child development, inclusion and program delivery and translate relevant learning into centre practice.
Health, Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulations, licensing and compliance standards, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, public health guidance, fire safety requirements, organizational policies and other applicable laws.
- Serve as management's operational lead for workplace health and safety; work constructively with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, respond to recommendations, complete assigned corrective actions and ensure staff receive required information and training.
- Maintain and test emergency, evacuation, illness, medication, sanitation, supervision and incident-response procedures, ensuring drills, inspections, logs and follow-up actions are completed.
- Lead the timely response, documentation, notification and follow-up for notable situations, serious incidents, workplace injuries, hazards, complaints and licensing concerns, escalating promptly to the Head of School and appropriate authorities.
- Ensure facilities, outdoor spaces, equipment, food service and supplies are safe, suitable, maintained and appropriately resourced within the approved budget.
Family and Community Relationships
- Cultivate welcoming, respectful and timely communication with families, including clear information about programs, policies, changes and individual children's development.
- Receive and resolve family questions, concerns and complaints fairly, confidentially and in a timely manner, documenting and escalating significant matters as appropriate.
- Maintain current family communications, handbooks and public information in consultation with the Head of School and MAELC Committee.
- Strengthen family engagement and partnerships with community organizations, churches/parishes and service providers that support children and families.
- Represent MAELC professionally in the community and contribute to the broader
mission and leadership life of Munro Academy.
The Director may undertake other related duties assigned by the Head of School consistent with the scope and level of the position.
Qualifications
Required
- Current Nova Scotia ECE Level 2 or Level 3 classification, as required for a facility serving infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
- Valid first aid certification that includes infant CPR, or ability to provide it before commencing work.
- Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Register search, satisfactory to Munro Academy.
- Demonstrated commitment to high-quality Christian early learning and active
involvement in a local church/parish. - Commitment to working faithfully within Munro Academy’s Statement of Faith and
community vision, active involvement in a local church or parish, and the ability to serve staff and families from diverse backgrounds with clarity, compassion and respect. - Demonstrated leadership, organization, communication, problem-solving and
administrative ability, including sound judgment in confidential and high-pressure
situations. - Experience supervising staff and working collaboratively with families, colleagues,
regulators and community partners. - Ability to meet the normal physical and operational demands of an early learning centre leadership role.
Strong Assets
- Level 3 ECE classification and significant experience in a licensed early learning setting.
- Previous experience as a centre director, assistant director or supervisor in a large or multi-program early learning centre.
- Experience with budgeting, provincial funding and reporting, licensing inspections, human-resource administration, unionized workplaces, collective-agreement administration and occupational health and safety.
- Training or experience in Christian ministry, pedagogical leadership, inclusion or organizational leadership.
Compensation
Salary range: $63,900-$75,700 gross annually, based on provincially approved hourly wage rates and the successful candidate's years of recognized experience and ECE classification level; paid over 12 months based on FT hours worked. Standard payroll deductions apply.
